Wassail – ancient ceremony for a good harvest

Wassailing is an ancient English tradition to wish the Apple Trees a bountiful harvest in the coming year. It’s also an excuse for a bit of fun!

Come and join us in the Hub and the Orchard in Lordship Rec for FREE fun from 2pm onwards.

 2 – 3 pm

The General Activities Room in the Hub for Lantern making, all children must be accompanied by an adult

3 – 3.30 pm

All process to The Orchard, Gather round the Wassail tree. (children bring pots and pans to bang to scare away evil spirits from the Orchard!) accompanied by live music to Sing the Wassail song;  raise a toast (mulled cider or nonalcholic hot sorrel) to the Apple Trees; children decorate them with fertility symbols (bread/sliced fruit). Collection in aid of a local Charity.

3.45 – 4.45pm

Warm up with hot drinks and home-made apple bakes, music, poetry, story telling and singing from members of Tottenham Community Choir

4.45pm  CLOSE

All are welcome. It’s FREE, though there will be a collection in aid of a local charity, and donations will be welcome towards cost of the food and drink. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

IMPORTANT

Please come dressed for the weather and note that the ground may be very wet and slippery underfoot. Be especially careful to wear warm and waterproof footwear.
